Teddy Chua just got back from his UK work trip and his work requires him to fly off to Washington by Sunday! *sob sob* Initially, news was that they may post him to US for 1 month...when I heard it, I almost fainted...luckily, on Valentine's Day, it's confirmed that he has to go for 1 week.

Saturday: he is on duty for the Air show then he joins my family for dinner at Thai Village Restaurant (Goodwood Park Hotel) to celebrate my dad's birthday.
Sunday: he will bring me to the Air show before his late night flight to Tokyo->Chicago->Washington (as the air tickets were bought too late).

The editors of the choro-music blog wish our readers A Happy New Year/um feliz ano novo 2013 and thank you for your interest and support in 2012! The last blog entry in 2012 likes to point you to some important items released earlier this year, a review will be published later, the following may be considered just a small teaser.
In September Jorge Carvalho de Mello's long awaited book on Garoto, 'Gente Humilde - Vida e música de Garoto', was published by Edições SESC SP. This work is a result of de Mello's research that has opened access to previously unavailable material including Garoto's own diary revealing new aspects of his life and career. The book is based on the series of articles by de Mello published at the Sovaco de cobra website as 'O cancioneiro de Garoto'. A review (- in Portuguese) of this essential work is available here and the book can be purchased online here.

The great bandolinista Dudu Maia has been touring with his present Trio Brasileiro both in Brazil and abroad. Besides Dudu Maia on 10 string bandolim the trio consists of Douglas Lora on violão 7 cordas and Alexandre Lora on pandeiro and percussion. Earlier this year the trio released their first self-produced cd, 'Simples Assim'. containing thirteen excellent tracks of choro and related music. - To give you an impresseion of the music performed at the cd, here is an uploaded video featuring Trio Brasileiro playing 'Saruê Bengala', a composition by Dudu Maia and the opening track of the cd - enjoy!

The cd is available for purchase in the mp3 format here

These three happy persons, left to right, are André Ribeiro (bandolim), Priscilla Matos (piano) and Roberto Amaral (pandeiro), who formated the Conjunto Subindo A Ladeira, another great Brazilian trio excelling in choro. The trio released their first cd, 'De Trés em Trés', earlier this year, the disc contains excellent compositions by Priscilla Matos and André Ribeiro reflecting the classic choro repertoire and drawing inspiration from Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim a.o..

The cd is available for purchase in mp3 here. Here is a recorded live-performance from the release concert of the trio's cd, the tune played is a composition titled 'Maxixe do Vovô' - enjoy!

The last item to wet you teeth is the new cd by Choro das 3, 'Escorregando', released in October this year and the second outing by this talented and successful, young trio from the São Paulo state.

The cd has 14 tracks of delightful choro including a couple of selfcomposed works, everything very well produced and excecuted. Corina (flute, 24), Elisa (bandolim and clarinet, 19) and Lia (violão 7 cordas, 22) are accompanied by their father on pandeiro and invited guests in a repertoire and performance that reflects the heart and core of choro tradition. The cd may be purchased in mp3 format here. The release of the Escorregando cd was celebrated in a concert at the Cultura Inglesa São Paulo - SP, the concert was recorded on video and is available here.

Earlier this year Choro das 3 was on tour in the USA, here's a recorded fragment from the trio's performance in Woods Hole, MA, 9.2.2012 - enjoy!

Twenty Minutes of Mychael Danna's Score for Life of Pi

To contact us Click HERE

Recently, youtuber, Cinemamusica1, posted over twenty minutes of Mychael Danna's upcoming score for the highly anticipated film, LIFE OF PI.  We apparently get a sampling of the entire soundtrack which looks to have 28 tracks.  The original soundtrack isn't due to release from Sony Classical until November 19, 2012 in the United States.
It appears that Danna includes a number of ethnic instruments like the bansuri, instantly matching the mystical and quite beautiful tone that the film will also be creating visually.  We hear some wordless, female vocals, which further add to the exoticism.   There are one or two moments that give me hope that they might be building up to exultant moments like those found in his work for The Nativity Story.  The general tone of these samples does suggest that the score will likely stay more restrained than that though. The track "God Storm" does make it clear that Danna definitely delivers some dramatic, symphonic material for sure.
We have about a month to think about and anticipate it.
What do you think of you hearing here?  Does this make you look forward to hearing it in full or seeing the film any more?

Brother's Keeper (Soundtrack) by Bill Brown - Review

Bill Brown, A New Man in TownReview by Edmund Meinerts

A Christian drama film set in 1950s small-town Georgia, BROTHER’S KEEPER deals with the trials and tribulations of two brothers, Andy and Pete, who may be identical twins but whose dispositions are less than similar; whereas Pete is a pacifist with strong faith in God and ambitions to become a preacher, Andy is more cynical, believes in revenge and has no plans for the future. When Pete is framed for a murder, Andy must come to terms with their differences in order to try and clear his name. The title of the film is a Cain and Abel reference, though it seems rather unlikely that this type of heartwarming Sunday School fodder would stick to the same ending. Providing the score is BILL BROWN, who has worked in video games since the late 90s and supplied music to nearly 200 episodes of the crime TV show CSI: NEW YORK – this is one of his first film credits, along with THE DEVIL’S TOMB in 2009, with MovieScore Media releasing both as part of their admirable mission to give exposure to lesser-known scores and composers.
Practically any film score collector, upon spinning BROTHER’S KEEPER for the first time, will instantly know which composer was most heavily featured on the temp track: THOMAS NEWMAN. An obvious choice, considering that he has provided music for a number of Southern drama films stretching back to FRIED GREEN TOMATOES in 1992. Fortunately (or not – more on this later), there aren’t any direct quotations of melody or theme – rather, it’s the way the score’s moody atmosphere is created. “Georgia 1949” (1) opens the score with a vaguely exotic flute flourish and leads into melancholic, echoing piano figures (both recognizable NEWMAN techniques). The harmonic language is actually a cross between NEWMAN and some of JAMES NEWTON HOWARD’s more downbeat writing from UNBREAKABLE and BATMAN BEGINS, a rather enticing combination.

LIncoln (Soundtrack) by John Williams - Review

A Linc to the PastReview by Edmund Meinerts
Having hunted vampires earlier in the year, Abraham Lincoln now turns to the rather more serious matter of the abolition of slavery in STEVEN SPIELBERG’S acclaimed biopic LINCOLN. Having gone through a slew of rewrites in the pre-production stage concerning just which portions of Lincoln’s turbulent and eventful presidency to cover, the final product eventually honed in on just the last four months, dealing with the struggle to pass the slavery-banning 13th Amendment, the wrapping up of the Civil War, and ultimately the fateful visit to the theater on the night of April 14th, 1865 (spoilers?).
It being a SPIELBERG picture, and one concerning a prominent figure of American history no less, there was never even a shadow of a doubt that JOHN WILLIAMS would return to grace the production with his usual respectful sense of Americana. Listeners familiar with the maestro’s career will find absolutely no surprises in LINCOLN – it sounds exactly the way you would expect it to. And in a way, that is a comforting fact considering that the octogenarian’s legendary career is slowly but surely coming to an end; there is only so much new WILLIAMS music we’re going to be hearing, and each and every score is to be treasured.

Children's Day Birthday

Feeling very blessed to enjoy my birthday on Children's Day. It's the first year that MOE decided to allow the 1st Friday of October to be Children's Day holiday and it falls on 7 Oct this year. I woke up much later and spent my day playing Facebook, thanking all well-wishes and completing a project report.
By evening, it was time to set out to meet Teddy Chua for my birthday dinner treat. It was pouring quite heavily and I was running late as I got carried away doing my report. Luckily, Teddy Chua was patient enough to wait for me (think i was abt 15min late). We went to Bugis, Hotel Intercontinental, where he treated me to Japanese food. We walked to Bras Brasah to check out a book store but it was already closed. The slight drizzle added a romantic feel to the after-dinner walk. We walked over to artichoke, at Sculpture Garden but it was a full-house.
We went back to the lounge area in Hotel Intercontinental where Teddy Chua insisted on getting a mini birthday cake for me. The pianist was very observant and when the cake was served with a single lit candle, he immediately played the birthday song before resuming his original piano piece. Though Teddy Chua is tired out from work, his efforts to make me happy on my birthday is much appreciated.
I got home and sis gave me a handmade letter with our photos and a red packet...Thank you all dearies...i feel very loved and blessed to have all of you in my life. =)

Silver Linings Playbook (Soundtrack) by Danny Elfman - Review

Neither Cloud Nor LiningReview by Edmund Meinerts
A romantic comedy with a dramatic twist, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK sees Bradley Cooper’s character released from a mental health facility only to find that his wife has left him. While trying to reconcile with her, he meets Jennifer Lawrence’s character and forms a bond with her due to their shared neurotic disorders. Balancing comedy against a topic as serious as mental health is a precarious tightrope act, but done right it can be very rewarding (and, come the end of the year, awarding). Director David Owen Russell seems to have pulled it off with aplomb, the film gathering significant acclaim and generating a fair amount of Oscar buzz.
As one might expect for a romantic comedy, the film’s soundtrack is dominated by song placements, but nevertheless, DANNY ELFMAN was hired to fill in the gaps with a short original score, easily the least substantial of his impressive six assignments of 2012. Ditching the orchestra, ELFMAN opted to assemble a light rock ensemble for the project, augmented by piano, some synthetic overlays and – most notably – his own vocal talent layered several times on top of itself to create a small oohing-and-aahing choir in much the same way BRIAN TYLER has occasionally done for early and/or low-budget projects. That choir lends a definite and somewhat cheesy 60s-retro vibe to SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, equating the psychedelia of that decade to the confused state of the protagonists’ minds.

The 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards will be produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment. The BFCA and Berlin Entertainment are represented by Dan Black of Greenberg Traurig and Lance Klein of WME.

Dear Jason Teddy Chua Momo,

Thank you for taking the first step to ask me out and giving us a chance to experience the ups and downs in our life journey. Your love and efforts to make me happy can be felt and seen by myself and those around me. I know I have someone to motivate and support me and I wish to become your supportive half. I look forward to our life together as a married couple, beginning another phase and many other interesting chapters in our life from now on. I love you.

The Dark Knight Rises (Soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer - Gang-Tackle Review

All Dark Things...Review by The Tracksounds Gang
It began in 2005.  In the darkness, we put a smile on our face in 2008.  Finally, in 2012, all dark things must come to an end as Christopher Nolan's Batman revival rises one last time. Reduced from a dynamic-duo, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, finds composer HANS ZIMMER alone in his batcave providing the finale's closing notes.  With the new threat of Bane and maneuverings of Catwoman, the stage is set for Batman's last Nolan-directed, Zimmer-inflected, hurrah and the Tracksounds gang rises up to tackle THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.
Once you have finished reading each and every one of these opinions, you have our permission to ... listen.
