Ten Best Tracks from the Harry Potter Movies

Ten Best Tracks from the Harry Potter Movies

It’s been over a year since the film series came to a conclusion, so now is a great time to look back over the extensive catalogue of top notch orchestral music from Harry Potter. Within the eight soundtracks there are a total of 181 fabulous pieces. Today I do the stupid impossible heroic, and choose what I believe are the ten most rich and inspiring tracks from the entire Harry Potter series.

Sadly none of Patrick Doyle’s score for The Goblet Of Fire made it into my Top 10. This is unfortunate, since I really do love Doyle’s unique take on the Potter franchise. My favourite cues, however, all come from Nicholas Hooper, Alexandre Desplat and of course John Williams. It should come of no surprise that my list is dominated by John Williams.
Before I dive into the list, I feel I should note once more that this really is an impossible task, and that many superb pieces of music will inevitably be left out. However if there are some in particular that you would include in your top ten, I’d be very interested to hear from you! Simply leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
Without further ado, let’s jump in to-

10. Obliviate
Obliviate by Alexandre Desplat on Grooveshark
As the first track of The Deathly Hallows Part 1, this was an excellent introduction to Alexandre Desplat’s slice of the series. After a very slow and quiet opening the track builds into a wistful, rhythmic melody. The undercurrent impersonates the chugging sound a steam train (fitting for Potter) as the foreground is filled by seductively emotive strings. It’s an extremely effective piece I’ve been in love with since the very first time I heard it.

9. Dumbledore’s Farewell
Dumbledore's Farewell by Nicholas Hooper on Grooveshark
Nicholas Hooper brought us many dark themes over his two-movie-long relationship with Potter, and this is certainly one of the best. It’s gentle and tender, with powerful strings accompanied by subtle, eerie chorals. This piece supplies a perfectly morose tone for several of the most tense and cheerless moments in the film series.

8. Statues
Statues by Alexandre Desplat on Grooveshark
Rarely has fantasy action been so sentimental. Alexandre Desplat seems to rarely, if ever, compose action cues in the traditional way I expect. Instead, he creates beautiful, rhythmic pieces like this one, which don’t so much “score” the action of the film but instead toy with our emotions. The result in “Statues” is an beautiful piece of music which also works excellently in the film. I should note the similarity to another piece from The Deathly Hallows Part 2, “Courtyard Apocalypse”, which meddles with the same melody in a similar fashion. In the end I chose “Statues” for my list.

7. Dobby The House Elf
Dobby The House Elf by Harry and the Potters on Grooveshark
Playing to the lighter side of The Chamber Of Secrets, it’s impressive how well this track holds up by itself outside of the context of the film. In fact, I probably prefer this piece outside of the film, where you can really appreciate its musical prowess. Playful, mischievous and quirky, this piece is still totally grounded and controlled like all of John Williams’ greatest.

6. Flight Of The Order Of The Phoenix
Flight of the Order of the Phoenix by Nicholas Hooper on Grooveshark
This track from Nicholas Hooper’s first Harry Potter score may be tragically short, but it uses it’s one-and-a-half minute runtime to build into a spectacular cue. As with all of these great Harry Potter tracks, Hooper combines palpable senses of excitement and wonder to form a magical piece of music. It’s a tragedy that Hooper didn’t get to spend more time developing themes like this one.

5. Harry’s Wondrous World
Harry's Wondrous World by John Williams on Grooveshark
As we head adventurously into the final five tracks, here’s John Williams doing what John Williams does best: non-stop magnificence. I think of this piece as the unofficial theme for Hogwarts, as it seems to describe musically the magical castle we know and love. It’s a remarkable combination of the themes of The Philosopher’s Stone, stirred together with copious doses of pure triumph, ending the film on a glorious note.

4. A Window To The Past
A Window To The Past by John Williams on Grooveshark
The perfect antithesis to “Harry’s Wondrous World”, this is John Williams taking Potter into dark and sombre territory in The Prisoner of Azkaban. The wistful melody never fails to conjure powerful images in my mind of darkness and snow and hooded Dementors from The Prisoner of Azkaban. Essentially a woodwind solo, this track contains the power to bring (manly) tears to my eyes. It really encapsulates an intense and childlike sense of longing.

3. The Chamber Of Secrets
The Chamber Of Secrets by Harry and the Potters on Grooveshark
Excitement and mystery are incarnate in this grandiose, almost vampirical piece. A spine tingling series of descending notes on organ lead into a waltz of strings and horns, building powerfully to an epic conclusion. The orchestra seems to come together so fluidly and graciously, changing drastically from moment to moment but never leaving the listener behind.

2. Hedwig’s Theme
Hedwig's Theme by John Williams on Grooveshark
This is the quintessential piece of Harry Potter music. From the delicate tinkling of the iconic theme we’ve all heard a thousand times to the cheeky pumping of brass, and then into the inevitable culmination of the united orchestra. Most of this track is used in film to score the action-packed wizarding sport, Quidditch. I’m glad Williams doesn’t hold back.

1. Fawkes The Phoenix
Fawkes The Phoenix by Harry and the Potters on Grooveshark
Fluttering out of the magic and mystery, this piece will forever be romantically entwined with the Harry Potter universe. Mixing an absolutely epic scale of majesty and grandeur with the delicate beauty and wonder of the enchanting melody, this track is another of the many reasons that John Williams is one of the greatest composers of all time.
There it is! My favourite magical music from Harry Potter. As I mentioned at the beginning, there are so many more incredible tracks and themes that I absolutely adore in the eight Potter soundtracks. In the end I whittled down to this list of ten, but maybe your list would be different? Let me know, what are your favourite pieces of music from the Harry Potter series?

Children's Day Birthday

Feeling very blessed to enjoy my birthday on Children's Day. It's the first year that MOE decided to allow the 1st Friday of October to be Children's Day holiday and it falls on 7 Oct this year. I woke up much later and spent my day playing Facebook, thanking all well-wishes and completing a project report.
By evening, it was time to set out to meet Teddy Chua for my birthday dinner treat. It was pouring quite heavily and I was running late as I got carried away doing my report. Luckily, Teddy Chua was patient enough to wait for me (think i was abt 15min late). We went to Bugis, Hotel Intercontinental, where he treated me to Japanese food. We walked to Bras Brasah to check out a book store but it was already closed. The slight drizzle added a romantic feel to the after-dinner walk. We walked over to artichoke, at Sculpture Garden but it was a full-house.
We went back to the lounge area in Hotel Intercontinental where Teddy Chua insisted on getting a mini birthday cake for me. The pianist was very observant and when the cake was served with a single lit candle, he immediately played the birthday song before resuming his original piano piece. Though Teddy Chua is tired out from work, his efforts to make me happy on my birthday is much appreciated.
I got home and sis gave me a handmade letter with our photos and a red packet...Thank you all dearies...i feel very loved and blessed to have all of you in my life. =)

Teddy Chua just got back from his UK work trip and his work requires him to fly off to Washington by Sunday! *sob sob* Initially, news was that they may post him to US for 1 month...when I heard it, I almost fainted...luckily, on Valentine's Day, it's confirmed that he has to go for 1 week.

Saturday: he is on duty for the Air show then he joins my family for dinner at Thai Village Restaurant (Goodwood Park Hotel) to celebrate my dad's birthday.

João Paulo Albertim - Toca Pernambuco

The cavaquinho is a regular standard instrument in Brasilian choro and samba ensembles as well as in other musical contexts. Usually, the cavaquinho is not exposed as a lead voice, the small guitar shaped instrument is most often used as part of a rhythm section. However, the cavaquinho has also been treated with success as a lead instrument by great musicians like Garoto, Waldir Azevedo, Henrique Cazes, Luciana Rabello a.o..In the young generation of gifted Brasilian musicians, João Paulo Albertim stands out as a master of the cavaquinho, who combines his skills as an excellent instrumentalist with composing and arranging music that integrates various musical genres and timbres of the North East of Brazil.

João Paulo Albertim (b 1985) is from Recife, Pernambuco. He had his first instrument, a cavaquinho, at 13 and later started his formal education in music at the conservatory of Recife with guidance by Professor Marco César.During his training at the conservatory he evolved his skills as a cavaquinho player and had the bandola (- a kind of loud bandolim) as his second instrument. He also started composing and arranging and has taken part in various musical projects that have included recording with other local musicians besides being a member of various ensembles excelling in Pernambuco's rich music traditions. Earlier this year, João Paulo Albertim has released his first recordings under his own name - João Paulo Albertim Toca Pernambuco.

The design of this project with the musical direction of conductor Marco César was to demonstrate the possibilities of timbre combinations and stimulate integration and fusion of musical genres and rhythms of Pernambuco not much known in the repertoire for cavaquinho. The music contains examples of baião, xote, forró, frevo da rua, caboclinho a.o. and the production has lasted about two years involving the participation of many people with different background and compositions made available by João Paulo Albertim as well as other local musicians and composers. The project that highlights the cavaquinho in various musical constellations is released on cd and there are 13 tracks of exciting, delightful and well produced music to listen to. However, the actual cd that was recorded in the studio of the conservatory of Recife is hard to find, instead you have the possibility to listen to all tracks in full length at Sound Cloud, here. You can also listen to some of the tracks at João Paulo Albertim's blog and find more info about the artist (- in Portuguese only). - To give you an impression of the music played by João Paulo Albertim I'll insert some studio performances uploaded at YouTube. Here is first the title track of the project,'Toca Pernambuco', João Paulo is accompanied by his present regular ensemble named Galho Seco after a composition by the legendary cavaquinho
player Jacaré

Next, here is a studio recording of 'A Banda no Frevo', a composition by Marco César and with arranging and participation by saxophonist and bandleader Spok

Finally, to end this small presentation of João Paulo Albertim, here is his tip-of-the hat to Waldir Azevedo and his famous composition 'Brasileirinho' accompanied by Galho Seco

Brother's Keeper (Soundtrack) by Bill Brown - Review

Bill Brown, A New Man in TownReview by Edmund Meinerts

A Christian drama film set in 1950s small-town Georgia, BROTHER’S KEEPER deals with the trials and tribulations of two brothers, Andy and Pete, who may be identical twins but whose dispositions are less than similar; whereas Pete is a pacifist with strong faith in God and ambitions to become a preacher, Andy is more cynical, believes in revenge and has no plans for the future. When Pete is framed for a murder, Andy must come to terms with their differences in order to try and clear his name. The title of the film is a Cain and Abel reference, though it seems rather unlikely that this type of heartwarming Sunday School fodder would stick to the same ending. Providing the score is BILL BROWN, who has worked in video games since the late 90s and supplied music to nearly 200 episodes of the crime TV show CSI: NEW YORK – this is one of his first film credits, along with THE DEVIL’S TOMB in 2009, with MovieScore Media releasing both as part of their admirable mission to give exposure to lesser-known scores and composers.
Practically any film score collector, upon spinning BROTHER’S KEEPER for the first time, will instantly know which composer was most heavily featured on the temp track: THOMAS NEWMAN. An obvious choice, considering that he has provided music for a number of Southern drama films stretching back to FRIED GREEN TOMATOES in 1992. Fortunately (or not – more on this later), there aren’t any direct quotations of melody or theme – rather, it’s the way the score’s moody atmosphere is created. “Georgia 1949” (1) opens the score with a vaguely exotic flute flourish and leads into melancholic, echoing piano figures (both recognizable NEWMAN techniques). The harmonic language is actually a cross between NEWMAN and some of JAMES NEWTON HOWARD’s more downbeat writing from UNBREAKABLE and BATMAN BEGINS, a rather enticing combination.

Twenty Minutes of Mychael Danna's Score for Life of Pi

To contact us Click HERE

Recently, youtuber, Cinemamusica1, posted over twenty minutes of Mychael Danna's upcoming score for the highly anticipated film, LIFE OF PI.  We apparently get a sampling of the entire soundtrack which looks to have 28 tracks.  The original soundtrack isn't due to release from Sony Classical until November 19, 2012 in the United States.
It appears that Danna includes a number of ethnic instruments like the bansuri, instantly matching the mystical and quite beautiful tone that the film will also be creating visually.  We hear some wordless, female vocals, which further add to the exoticism.   There are one or two moments that give me hope that they might be building up to exultant moments like those found in his work for The Nativity Story.  The general tone of these samples does suggest that the score will likely stay more restrained than that though. The track "God Storm" does make it clear that Danna definitely delivers some dramatic, symphonic material for sure.
We have about a month to think about and anticipate it.
What do you think of you hearing here?  Does this make you look forward to hearing it in full or seeing the film any more?

Teddy Chua just got back from his UK work trip and his work requires him to fly off to Washington by Sunday! *sob sob* Initially, news was that they may post him to US for 1 month...when I heard it, I almost fainted...luckily, on Valentine's Day, it's confirmed that he has to go for 1 week.

Saturday: he is on duty for the Air show then he joins my family for dinner at Thai Village Restaurant (Goodwood Park Hotel) to celebrate my dad's birthday.
Sunday: he will bring me to the Air show before his late night flight to Tokyo->Chicago->Washington (as the air tickets were bought too late).

Twenty Minutes of Mychael Danna's Score for Life of Pi

Dear Jason Teddy Chua Momo,

Thank you for taking the first step to ask me out and giving us a chance to experience the ups and downs in our life journey. Your love and efforts to make me happy can be felt and seen by myself and those around me. I know I have someone to motivate and support me and I wish to become your supportive half. I look forward to our life together as a married couple, beginning another phase and many other interesting chapters in our life from now on. I love you.
